Back to School: Benefits of voluntarily attending traffic school

Are traffic schools only for unsafe drivers?  No.  Even safe drivers can benefit from traffic schools, particularly through point and insurance reduction programs.  Point and insurance reduction programs have been designed to relay information about safe driving.  Private companies and corporations, also called course sponsors, who have been approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles facilitate these programs.

So what benefits can you gain from participating in one of these programs?  According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, along with gaining essential, up to date traffic information, you can also receive up to a four point reduction off of your driving record and a ten percent reduction in the base rate of your automobile and motorcycle liability and collision insurance premiums each year for up to three years!

Point and insurance reduction programs are offered in a classroom setting and through alternative delivery methods, such as over the internet, on CD, DVD, video, or cable television.  The lengths of the programs vary and the motorcycle safety/accident prevention course takes considerably longer.  In the classroom setting the course can extend over one or more sessions and attendance is mandatory, however participants do not have to take any formal testing to complete the course.  On the other hand, the course taken through an alternative delivery method can be completed at your own pace, as long as you complete it within 30 days after registration.  You will have to answer questions about the content of the course to ensure that you are taking the course, and may be required to register in person or to complete an assessment in person at the end of the course to validate that you actually took the course.

Once you have completed the course, your certificate of completion will be mailed to you, and your course sponsor will notify the DMV about your completion within ten weeks for you to receive a maximum four point reduction in your driver violation point total.  You should receive your certificate in the mail within forty-five days, and if you present your certificate to your insurance agent within ninety days of completing the course, the ten percent reduction in your liability and collision premium will be applied immediately, retroactive to the date you completed the course.
