Heroin injectionHunterdon Healthcare, a local New Jersey hospital, has donated $3,800 to supply Hunterdon County law enforcement officials with Naloxone. Naloxone is a medication that temporarily blocks the effects of heroin and other opiates so that an overdose victim can be kept alive long enough to be taken to a hospital and treated. Hunterdon Healthcare donated $2,500 in 2014 to provide the drug to local police and train them to administer it.  Since then, the county’s use of Naloxone has saved 16 lives from being taken by opiate overdoses.

Heroin abuse in New Jersey is at an all-time high. In Hunterdon County alone, 40 heroin overdoses were reported in 2015, more than a 300% increase from the 12 overdoses reported in 2014. The partnership between Hunterdon Healthcare and local police is representative of New Jersey’s efforts to reduce the needless fatalities caused by the heroin epidemic. Similarly, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie passed the Overdose Prevention Act in 2013 to allow individuals to report drug overdoses without having to fear that they will be arrested.

In New Jersey, it is unlawful to possess, sell, or intend to sell controlled substances like heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana, methamphetamines, and prescription drugs for which a person does not have a prescription. A person who does any of the above may be criminally prosecuted for possessing drugs or drug paraphernalia, selling drugs, or intent to distribute drugs. In some circumstances, a person may even be charged with more serious crimes such as drug trafficking or conspiring to sell a controlled substance. A person convicted of any of these crimes faces prison time, fines, and a permanent criminal record.
